Caribbean in Summer?

When thinking of places to go with your family in the summer, the Caribbean may not top the list. However, it can be a great place in the summer. There is golf, tennis, snorkeling, sailing and ocean breezes. The resorts are also less expensive and less crowded than in the peak season. We just went to Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico with Mike’s sister and two of her children and had a fabulous time.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is easy because it is a nice easy four hour plane ride from Chicago and they have direct flights so you can avoid stops in Miami. The other thing is that there is no need to go through customs. However, the real selling point is the resort of Dorado Beach. It was formerly a Rock Resort created by Lawrence Rockefeller and now run by Ritz Carlton. There are three Robert Trent Jones golf courses and a forth under restoration so for golfers there is really good golf which is a little hard to find in the Caribbean. Next, there are a couple of beautiful beaches. One is very calm and perfect for snorkeling. The other features sailing, kayaking, tubing and other water sports. Both feature aquamarine Caribbean waters and beachside dining. We all agreed they had some of the best beaches we have seen in the Caribbean. We also loved the beautiful pool, tennis courts, phenomenal work out center, nice accommodations and lovely service. One of the hits for the kids was the outdoor water park – The Watermill. It featured a pirate theme along with Mayan ruins, but had a lazy river and waterslides. It was actually the nicest looking water park I have ever seen. There really is something for everyone here.

Now you may think it will be too hot. However, there are often ocean breezes that keep you cool. We do go inside from noon to 2:00 to cool off in the heat of the day, but mornings and late afternoons are spectacular.

Some other Caribbean and off season places to consider in the summer:
Cayman Islands
St. Kitts

Many of these islands are close to the same temperature year round – Mid 80s with a cool breeze.
